THE FRANK “BUSTER” WORTMAN STORY Presented by local author Bill Nunes

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Frank Buster Wortman

 Branch Library

2145 Johnson Road

Saturday, November 23

 2:00-3:30 P.M.

Come and participate in this illustrated presentation/discussion based on Nunes’ just released book.    Nunes will also bring his “show and tell” crime collection. Here are some of the amazing things you’ll learn:

  • How did Wortman become involved in a life of crime?
  • What were his years like at Leavenworth Prison?
  • How many wives and children did he have?
  • What were his ties to the Capone Syndicate in Chicago?
  • Was he responsible for killing any of the Shelton gang?
  • What was his infamous moat house like?
  • Who killed his top lieutenant, Dutch Dowling, and why?
  • Did Wortman become a Christian before he died?
  • Who shot Wortman in the derriere and was it accidental, or not?

Author Bill Nunes of Glen Carbon has just released his 20th book – The Frank “Buster” Wortman Story.  It is an unauthorized biography of the rackets boss of southern Illinois from about 1943 to his death in 1968.    Nunes, A retired Collinsville/Edwardsville High social studies teacher, has produced a volume a year ever since he retired in 1994.  His first books were about his home town of East St. Louis, and since then he has expanded his horizons to produce books about Illinois and St. Louis.  He is currently working on a book about the baseball Cardinals.

This book has several surprises, says Nunes, including the inside dope on who really shot Wortman in the derriere and the possibility that Wortman had three wives, not two.  The biggie, however, is what he had to say to a priest the day he died of cancer.

November Book Club

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

The Devil in the White CityThe Six Mile Regional Library District is hosting a book club this November. The club will discuss Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America.”

Larson tells the unbelievable yet true tale of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair through the stories of two men: the architect responsible for the fair’s construction and a serial killer masquerading as a doctor.

Join the discussion 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, or 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the temporary location, the former Niedringhaus school building, 2901 State St.
Register and pick up a copy of the book at either library location: 2145 Johnson Road or 2901 State Street.
